Should I Play Max Bet on Slot Machines?

| Oct 1, 2019

One of the biggest questions online slot players ask is whether they should bet big, or whether they’re better off spinning the reels for lower stakes? Well, on this page, we’re going to take a look at whether playing at the maximum bet amount is a good thing, so you can then head off and give yourself the best chance of winning possible.

Should I Play Max Bet on Slot Machines?

Risk vs. Reward

The most obvious thing to say is this: the more money you bet, the more money you could win. This is because the prizes change, depending on the amount you bet. So, if you land a winning combination that pays 10x and have bet £1, you’ll find yourself winning £10 in total. If that bet had been worth £20 though, your prize would be a far more impressive £200.

Of course, you could also lose more when playing at higher stakes though, therefore it’s all about weighing up risk and reward. Does the risk of betting larger sums of money lead to increased potential rewards? This isn’t something we can advise on, as we don’t know your exact risk. After all, betting £100 a spin is far less risky for a millionaire than it is for the average person in the UK.

Progressive Jackpot Slots

Things are slightly different when it comes to some progressive jackpot slots. This is because at some slots of this type, the progressive jackpot is only open to those placing max bets. This therefore means that those who can afford to make the biggest bets should do so.

If you can’t afford to make the maximum bet at a progressive slot, don’t worry, as there are also plenty of progressive machines giving everyone a chance of the jackpot. There is a catch though, as it’s usually the case that the smaller your bet, the lower your chances of winning the progressive prize will be. This is the case with some of the biggest progressive slots, including Mega Moolah and Mega Fortune.

Increasing RTPs

It’s generally the case that the RTP of a slot won’t increase as you bet more money. So, if a slot’s RTP is 97%, it will stay at 97%, regardless of whether you bet £1 or £100. There are a few slots out there that do offer an increased RTP for those betting more though.

Perhaps the best-known example of this can be seen at some of the Rainbow Riches slots. These slots offer something called the Big Bet, which increases the bet size, but also enhances some of the features. By using the Big bet at these games, the RTP also rises, so it’s clearly the case that those playing these slots should bet as high as they can afford. This is an exception, rather than the rule though, as with most slots, there’s no way to enhance the RTP of the game.

Responsible Gambling

Of course, everything on this page must be viewed responsibly. Remember talking about risk earlier? Well, if you’re risking your mortgage or money you can’t afford to lose, the risk is simply too high. We absolutely encourage you to gamble responsibly and to never bet money that has been assigned to different, more important things.

So, there you have it – betting big will lead to bigger prizes, however you should only do it if you can afford the risk. Remember that you’ll find slots offering all levels of stakes – even including free play – when you sign up with one of the online casinos we’ve recommended on this site.
